Infrared photography involves using a film that is sensitive to infrared radiation - something that the human eye does not see. The film is exposed through special filters - an infrared filter appears opaque, fun to try to focus with an SLR camera - that only allow the infrared radiation to pass. Sometimes, especially to make it easier to focus on a scene, a dark red filter is used. The effect is similar, but not quite the same.
