"Uranium? Are you crazy?" Maybe, but the possibilities presented by some of the more obscure alternative photographic methods intrigue me. I decided to experiment with uranotype precisely because of its very obscurity. These images are from my early stages of exploring this once popular process (uranium papers were commercially available until about 1898), little heard of now. I have found working with alternative processes akin to alchemy - the magic of the image seems to be part of the presentation. The viewer is drawn into the image in a way not possible with today's digital technology. The process becomes part of the picture's mystery, the presentation part of its appeal. |
